On #2, all of a sudden [last week] *SOME* of the pictures stop
showing up, replaced by placeholder with red 'x'.
So what happened last week? Why some pictures and not others? I
emptied out temp folders, switched the "View" settings for pictures,
but I'm not sure what to try next. Any suggestions?
Tried Q3 at

You may have pictures hidden. Try View > Pictures > Detailed Display.
Yeah, you'd think that might be it, except I can see SOME pictures and
not others. It's set on DETAILED DISPLAY
If this fails, this is almost certainly a problem with your video
driver.
By going to Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot,
and dragging the Hardware Acceleration slider down three notches,
you will be able to disable Publisher from making the calls on the
video driver that cause this problem.
Hmmm, no difference. I can see some pictures, not others on #2.
