Publisher 2007-Web Page Option-Search Engine Information-keywords

M

Mike Defillo

Hello,
I created a web page with Microsoft Publisher 2007. On the 'Web Page Option'
screen there is 'Search Engine Information' and two spaces to enter
'Description' and 'Keywords'. Search engines use the words entered in these
two spaces to locate the best sites based on a persons search terms entered.
I had thought I entered well thought out words. My site is
www.bestbuildingplans.com but it is somewhere within 1,000,000 + hits. ie:
When I search google with the term 'Best Building Plan' its probably out
there somewhere? What 'Description' and 'Keywords' should I use on 'Web Page
Option' 'Search Information' might make my site be at least on the first page
of those 1,000,000 + hits?
Thank You
Mike

Mike,

Search engines, as I understand them, use lots of different criteria:
how long the site has been available, links from other sites, key words,
other things that aren't really mentioned.

Reality: if you are planning on relying only on Google and other SEs as
a way to get your site known, go back to the drawing board. Then again,
I clicked on the link to your site and it could not be found. Plus a
whois search says the site doesn't exist. Perhaps this is contributing
to the problem?

Hello David,
Thanks for the info. I did not provide a link just an address. Where did you
find a link to click on? or are you refering to my email link on the web site?

David,
Thanks for the info. I will check it out. It is quite obvious the top ten
are a WAY MORE devoloped than mine ;-). I will check out SEO and the like and
as I develop my site and learn more maybe I can get up in the top 500,000
;-). Thanks for a straight answer
Have a good night!

Ah, another naive young web builder ;-) Let me know when you figure out the
secret.

Google SEO or Search Engine Optimization and start reading...its an open
ended subject. Or start with the SEO for Google. There is no simple answer
to your question, or everyone would be in the top 10. There are companies
and people that spend every day working to get their sites or clients in the
top ten, and others spending thousands to buy a place. Plus you aren't
exactly offering a unique product...you are competing against a HUGE number
of sites about building plans...

As Mike suggested, I wouldn't rely on getting found via the search engines.
I would suggest that you put a lot of your time and effort at producing good
content...and driving people to your website via print media.

David,

An interesting note: It may be misleading how a designer's web site
actually ranks in Google. If you use cookies, Google can tell if you
have done a search for say Tinkscafe.com in the past. If you have and
then clicked on the link, Google will rank it higher in your search the
next time.

This guy posted how great he was at getting his sites ranked in Google,
that after only a couple of weeks he was ranked first. I used the same
terms he did, very specific ones and he wasn't ranked on the first page!

It also takes TIME...don't expect to move up the ladder in a few days -
sometimes it takes weeks...months!
Your URL to your site doesn't work, or I'd take a look.

I have a question: Originak e-mail stated web options is under tools but in
my version of Pub 2007 it does not show this option.
I already used the create my website but wanted to go back and place
keywords using the search engine information but it will not let me.

Is this program such that you need to know from the beginning what and how
you want things because once you created it, you can not go back and alter
certain things?

Thanks Kim

Hello Rob,
Yeh. I registered my site with Google, MSN and Yahoo per written
recomendation from my web host/server (Tigertech.net) and upon doing so it
was conveyed that it may take up to a couple of weeks before my site
'www.bestbuildingplan.com' (no 's') will be recognized. So far using "LIVE"
search engine seems to be the first to recognize the web address. Still no
luck on the keyword search no matter what serch engine I use.

Thanks for your input and recognizing that there is no 's' in my web address.
Happy days!

Try putting more specific words in there... drafting stockton california
....stuff like that. BUT mostly it takes time and links from other sites to
bump you up some. SEO is a black art :)

You had part of the answer. Go to Tools and then Web Page Options, not
Options. It is there that you add your keywords, description etc. And you
can change these at any time. Just make any changes you want in the original
Publisher document and Publish to the Web to produce new html output, and
upload it.

In the future it is best to post a new question, instead of adding on to a
completed thread...we might not notice that you are asking a question, and
not just replying to a question.
