Is there a setting / rule / whatever that will automatically convert 1st,
2nd, etc., to superscript for the st, nd, etc. without having to edit font
each time?

You can customize the toolbar and drag the superscript icon to the toolbar.
Click the icon just before the superscript and right after...

Or you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+= (Ctrl++) to toggle
superscript on/off.

Easier my way.

Suit yourself.

When I'm typing, my hands stay glued to the keyboard; having to move my
hand to the mouse to toggle a toolbar button is far slower for me than
hitting Ctrl+Shift+=.

I figure it's probably more helpful in the end to let the OP decide
which works better for him/her.
