Publisher Stop the Calendar wizard defaulting custom pictures

I want to be able to change date ranges in a calendar publication without
having to reinsert all my picturs again.
Surely this can be done

In that case why doesn't Microsoft rewrite options into the wizard to allow
this.

Well there are better alternatives that do have substantially more features
and options than Publisher will ever have including PDF etc all built in.
Perhaps you should investigate the alternatives like most of us regulars
have done and changed.
