Publishing a web site by using ftp w/Publisher 2007 & Godaddy.com

G

Geri

I have seen and read several threads about this problem, and have tried
several different versions to get my program uploaded to my website. I have
mapped my network from my computer to my ftp address (using my website name
and also my website number {I am not sure if that is the right wording, but
it goes something like 72.167...}, and was successful in mapping it. When I
try to Publish to the web, choosing the mapped drive, it looks like it starts
to upload, but I get either one of two error messages, similar in nature.
The error message says that an "FTP folder error occurred while opening the
folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to access this
folder. the Details says either "55/geridunn/index the system cannot find
the file specified" or it says 550/geridunn/index the system cannot find
the folder specified"
I have also tried using Filezilla to upload my website, but all it gave me
was a blank screen, even though filezilla said that the files uploaded
correctly.
any hope for me?

Thank you for trying to provide some details of your problem. In the future
always provide which version of Publisher you are using and whether you are
using XP or Vista and the URL of your site.

GoDaddy has some excellent tutorials on uploading via FTP:

Reference: GoDaddy: Using Windows XP to Upload Your Site:
http://help.godaddy.com/article/106

Reference: GoDaddy: Using Windows Vista to Upload Your Site:
http://help.godaddy.com/article/4191

And since you did download and install FileZilla, I personally would
concentrate on learning how to use that tool, but read the appropriate
article above first. Then here are a couple references on how to use
FileZilla:

Reference: FileZilla documentation:
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/documentation/

Reference: Aplus.net: How do I upload with Filezilla:
http://www.apluskb.com/scripts/How_do_I_upload_with_answer3668.html
This article has some good screenshots that may help you understand how to
use FileZilla.

Now in your case you may already have a FTP connection setup from your
efforts to map a drive to your server. In that case, you may only need to
open My Computer or Windows Explorer (shortcut: Windows key + E) and click
on the mapped drive and wait for it to connect. This may take a few minutes.

Once you have your FTP connection set up, then from your Publisher file go
to File > Publish to the web and direct your web files to somewhere on your
computer where you can find the files. Then copy and paste, or drag and drop
the index.htm file (your home page) and the index_files folder which
contains all your supporting graphics and the other pages of your site.
Reference: Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA100947601033.aspx
And read the section: "Publish a Web site to a folder on your computer", for
more specifics on how to Publish to the Web and direct your files to your
computer. Just remember to do it in two steps. Publish your web files to
your computer, then upload those files via ftp.

This can be confusing, but just keep reading the instructions until you get
it. Once you do it will be easy to upload your files.

Hi Geri,

Try to acess your ftp directly and publish your files using copy and paste.
To do that write ftp.yourdomain.com ( not in the IE or Firefox enviroment but
in any folder of your PC ex. C:/Website/ ) then it will ask you to enter user
name and password and then you can go to your httpdocs (or rootfolder ) and
paste your files that publisher has created. ( in publisher select "publish
to the web" and then save the files in a folder in your PC where you can then
copy it )

If you cannot do that its mean soemthing is going wrong with your ftp
account or the folder is mark as "read only" and you cannot write on it. you
wll need to contact your hosting company to slove it.
If succesfully you can do it then its mean something you have set wrong in
the way you publish through the MSPublisher.

500 series errors are generally permissions issues...check with GoDaddy that
you are using the correct un/pw for FTP and publishing to the correct
folder.
