purge message reading "message no longer availble on server"

I have many messages I can't purge from outlook because they are "no longer
available on the service" They remain in my inbox with a line crossed through
them like the others that you are deleting but do get purged when you select
the purge option. Please help. There must be a way to get these out of my
inbox.
