PWS - Adding a Db to my website

J

James Randall

I would like to add a DB to my website (creating through a learning manual)
However the book says "at this point you'll need PWS" if you haven't got it
go to Microsoft.com and download it.

I am running XP home (it doesn't work on this Operating system)

Is that it then? or is there an alternative??

James.

Kevin Spencer

The alternative is to install Windows XP Pro or server.

You install the IIS 5.1 web server from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
and I believe Accessories.

There is no PWS for WinXP Pro.

That's odd. You siad you were running XP Home. Well, if you're running XP
Pro, it comes bundled with IIS (Internet Informatin Services). PWS is a
scaled-down older version of IIS. IIS is the same web server that is used on
Windows 2003 server, with a few restrictions you don't need to worry about
unless you're planning on hosting with it. You can install it from your
Control Panel Add/Remove Windows Components utility.

Thanks Kevin......It was the the guy above me that had XP Home and I jumped

this a try.

Once you have IIS installed you need to install the FP SE and the open the local hoisted site as http://localhost/

For the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions Support Center see:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;fp10se

1) Download FP 2002 Server Extensions:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpse02win.asp
English ones are at:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/FrontPage2002/fpse1002/1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/FPSE1002.exe
2) Download FP2002 Server Extensions Updates (and install in this order):
http://download.microsoft.com/download/FrontPage2002/fpse1001/1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/fpse1001.exe
http://download.microsoft.com/download/FrontPage2002/fpse1002/1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/fpse1002.exe
3) Install the Security Patch at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813380
4) Then to apply them see:

Hi deacon,

Sorry about the misidentification.
Back again Kevin........I have it installed. Now how do I publish to it.
MS
in its continuing effort to baffle users installed this program somewhere
on
my hard drive and I have no idea where it is or how to publish to it.

Now, be kind to Microsoft! It's not their fault. Internet Information
Services is a service, not an application. Services run in the background of
other tasks. And forget about your hard drive. It's time now to start
thinking in HTTP. Although there are certainly files and folders related to
IIS on your hard drive, you need to think in terms of HTTP now. Instead of
thinking you're going to publish to a hard drive location, you need to
publish to a network location, identified by a URL.

A URL has a domain component and a more specific address of the resource.
The domain is identified by the IP address or domain name of the domain. On
your local machine, the IP address is 127.0.0.1, and, assuming you have a
HOSTS file, the domain name of "localhost." So, if you wanted to open a
local web site, you would type in the URL http://localhost/SubWebName or
http://127.0.0.1/SubwebName. You will want to use subwebs on your local
machine, as the version of IIS that comes with XP Pro only supports one root
web.

Back again Kevin. I installed the extensions, the upgrades etc; but when I
tried to publish to http://localhost/mysubweb it gave me an error message
that the Share Point Services are not installed. I also went into the
control panel and enabled the IIS so where do I go from here?

Can you open http://localhost in FP?

If so, then create a folder, then convert the folder to a subweb/site, then try publishing to it.

I was able to navigate to the tasks selection but "install" the extensions is
not one of the options. It had "check extensions" there and I clicked on
that and it said they were ok. ??

Can you access the web via http://127.0.0.1 via FP and the browser?

No, I am unable to open the web using that URL. I get an error message that
the folder is not accessable. It says that it may be in an unavailable
location, protected with a password, or the file name contains a / or\.

MS never makes anything simple. I have no idea how to modify the registry
and the Jimco add in would not install. I got an error message about some
library file is missing. One would think with the vast array of knowledge
that MS has, they would be able to put all of this in one pacakage and you
download it and your done;

I am able to put http://localhost/myweb in the URL address and the web page
comes up but when I try to publish from Front Page to that address, I start
getting error messages. When I open Front Page to the Web in question, it
shows the web in the left window just as with any other web I might open and
in the right window it shows all of the files under C:\inetpub\wwwroot.

I am about to toss in the towel unless someone has a solution.

The root web would actually be http://localhost (or the name of your local
computer) http://mycomputername

the /myweb would only be added if you were working with a subweb.

I don't understand why you are trying to publish to your own local machine?
Creating a server based web and working on it is all you need to do.

Why are you creating the extra work?
