Random reassigning of keyboard keys

A

AMG

Periodically, the computer will, in office applications particuarly word and office (both office xp) reassign the keys on the Qwerty keyboard to something else. suddenly pushing "j" will produce "a" or some other letter, number or symbol. it is consistent during an event (j will always give a) but the assignment is different with each new event

Used to be I could close all office applications, then restart them and would be fine, but now I have not been able ot get it reset without rebooting

Any ideas???

Two ideas spring to mind:

1) it's a virus

2) someone's installed software for one of the odd-ball keyboard layouts
(remember Dvorak?)
