Read Only Document Errors in "Word"

Does anyone know how to solve the following problem.

I can't open any document that was saved as either read
only or was password protected so it can only be opened
in the read only form. If I click on such document
nothing happens.

Even on documents I created in Word, the read only files
will not open unless I enter the password in which case
it does open. This only started happening when I
started using a new computer with Windows XP. Never had
the problem while using windows 2000. I am currently
using Word 97 SR-1

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
