Reading Pub 2003 files w/ Adobe 5.0

M

Matthew Wilson

I recently began creating newsletters, envelopes, etc with my Publisher 2003 software. However, when I save them to file (usually Publisher file type), Adobe 5.0 cannot retrieve the file for viewing. I always have to go back to the original Publisher 2003 program to view it.

The error message is this:

Acrobat could not open 'IBF 7.23.pub' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been corrupted (for example, it was sent as an email attachment & wasn't correctly decoded).

How do I post this file to my web site, as a document file to be viewed, if it cannot be opened by the Reader? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Matthew Wilson

You can't just post a .pub file. Acrobat Reader reads .pdf files. To create
them, you will either need Acrobat Standard or Professional (not the free
reader). This will cost you about $275 for the Std version, more for Pro.

If that's out of your price range, there are several low cost or free
alternatives. I have Acrobat Standard and really like it but I also have
PrimoPDF, which is a free albeit huge, download from www.primopdf.com. The
advantage to have Acrobat is that I can edit the .pdf files. PrimoPDF does
not allow you that option - all is does it make them.

Thank you JoAnn ~

Is there any way to save the original Publisher 2003 file into a Word document type of file or something that would not require Acrobat (or similar) to read it?

No, nor would you want to. What if the target audience doesn't use Word or
uses an older version? .pdf files are a universally accepted method of
sharing data with others. Stick with what works. Use the low-cost or free
programs to create the .pdfs if you have to. If you need to make a change -
you have to go back, edit the .pub file, create a new .pdf, and post that.
(Now you see why I like Acrobat Standard. I sometimes miss teeny things that
can be easily touched up with Acrobat.)

I would hardly classify 10.2MB as "huge".
A little on the large side for 56k users maybe - but even at 56k I could
download it in under an hour.

I start classifying things as very large when they get past 30MB, and huge
when they pass about 75 - 100MB

Okay, in those terms that isn't huge but I'm not accustomed to downloading
files that are that size. I guess it all depends on your point of view. Kind
of like how much is a lot of money of you.
