Receive c0000005 (access violation) when opening Word XP document

I have W2K and Office 97. Whenever I receive a Word XP document from someone else and try to open the document from Word 97, I receive an error that Word needs to close. I checked the error log and it is a c0000005 (access violation). I've tried opening the attached Word XP document from an email attachment, and saving the attachment to my hard drive prior to opening it. Both attempts provide the same results. Any suggestion on opening Word XP documents from Word 97
