MS Word 2016, iMac with High Sierra 13.4

I was working on a simple text document (no formatting aside from first line indent) when the file suddenly went crazy adding {{{{}}}} and eventually I received: Microsoft word: fields are nested too deeply

I didn't even know Word had fields, that they could be nested and let alone there was depth. Anyone has any idea why this error would pop while typing a plain file?

I've attached the original Word file with the format and replaced the text with something else

Thanks.

The maximum nesting depth for fields in Word is 20. That you're getting fields you don't want suggests someone's been leaning on Cmd-F9.

Mailmerges use mergefields, plus other fields and, especially on Macs, documents set up as forms often use formfields. To see what else you can do with field coding, check out my Microsoft Word Field Maths Tutorial, at:
