Recently used file list not available in Word 2003 and Excel 2003

I have office 2003 and my recently used file list (at the bottom of the file
menu) has disappeared. Have gone to Tools/general/ and the option to enable
and select the number of files to be shown is grayed out and unable to be
selected. Have this problem on both Excel 2003 and Word 2003. Might also
exist on power point but I haven't been using that. Any help on how to get
this option working again would be greatly appreciated.

You can use TweakUI to restore the settings

For Windows XP get TweakUI from this link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
Within TweakUI in the Explorer section make sure that "Maintain document
history" is selected.

For other versions of Windows use TweakUI 1.33 available from this link
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/powertoys/networking/nttweakui.asp
Select the IE tab.
Click to select the "Add new documents to Documents on Start Menu " check
box, and then click OK.
