recovering text

can a word document be recovered if the text has been replaced/saved in
error, ie. text has been deleted - now an empty doc. Is there a utility to
recover originally saved text?

If you had "Automatically create backup copy" checked in Tools > Options >
Save, then there would be a copy of the previous version of the document in
a file named "Backup of XYZ.wbk" in the same folder. (If it isn't checked,
now you know why it should be!)

Failing that, if you haven't yet closed the empty document, you can press
Ctrl+Z (the Undo command) until the document returns to its previous state
and then save it again.

Otherwise, the answer is "No". Where do you imagine the original text might
have been saved if you told Word not to save it?
