The problem has been resolved by microsoft aust techs. After a few phone
calls (I was unsuccessful with msoft online assistance...for reasons yet to
be determined)

The problem was that a file 'officeav.dll' (part of nortons/symantec) was
preventing these files from opening. After Nortons suite of products
corrupted my registry files initially, and now this..they have no hope to be
used or recommended by myself again..
