Relative paths to graphic file links forced to Absolute paths

I'm using Word 2002 to create a spec doc designed to be
read from the web (using save as HTML). When I go to edit
the HTML in Word, all of the relative paths to the linked
graphics (i.e. INCLUDEPICTURE fields) are replaced w/
absolute paths specific to my system
(e.g. "file:///c:\\projects\\index_files\\...").

The original relative paths were valid in the original
HTML (I checked it out using notepad) and the HTML
displayed correctly in IE. How can I get Word to leave the
relative paths alone?

I'm sorry to say that you can't. Believe me, I tried every possible method
known to man. The only "solution" I found was to correct the paths, save and
close the document, and immediately FTP it to the Web site. This works only
because the paths are not changed until you reopen the document. This
intransigence on Word's part was one reason I upgraded to FrontPage.

I was afraid of that. Looks like I'll be using FrontPage
also. Thanks for responding.

Suzanne,

I have no way to test this because I don't have access to any version of
Word later than 2000, but did your "every possible method" include nesting
the relative path as a QUOTE field inside the INCLUDEPICTURE field. It
seems like that might force Word to accept the relative path as literal text
that can't be automatically changed by this annoying behavior.

I didn't think of that (having somehow never gotten around to using the
QUOTE field for anything else), but it does sound promising. I'll have to
investigate that at some point (since I think Word 2003 still has the same
problem).
