Remaining Work Being Added Back

Tim

I am having a problem in Project 2003 with Remaining Work being added back.
As project admin, I generally log onto PWA for any resource that leaves the
project to make sure Remaining Work has been adjusted to zero for all tasks.
In many instances, I am noticing that Project is automatically adding back
Remaining Work for some (but not all) of these resources (at a later time, not
instanteously). Generally, it is an insignificant amount of hours (one hour
here, one there, lots of times a partial hour on an activity). But I want to
close out these resources and have a true reflection of Remaining Work for
the project.

We have SP1 installed.

Any ideas?

Hi Tim,

As a practice, I have my project managers or resource managers zero out
remaining work; I do not perform this action as an administrator. The PM/RM
needs to be reminded that just because the resource is no longer there, the
work still needs to be finished by someone. Food for thought.

To your issue, if remaining hours are being charged back later, check to see
if the task is shared by multiple resources. If so, when the PM goes to
increase work/remaing work on the task, the amount will be spread over all
the resources assigned, even if one person is no longer at the company or on
the task. Your PM/RM may be accidently adding hours to the task level and
not noting how is on the task.

Hope it helps,

Sara

I agree with your comment about who should be reducing the Remaining Work. I
used the role admin too loosely in this case. I am also the project manager
(and the admin and the resource manager and the......).

I suspect I am causing the problem based on your explanation. Most of my
activities have multiple resources on them. For a variety of reasons, I
sometimes increase the duration of activities (in Project Pro) by simply
adding days to the duration of the activity (as opposed to having resources
increase remaining work to allow Project to calculate automatically). Its
just a convenience issue to have the file statused correctly. Do you suspect
this is the problem too.

Appreciate your assistance.
