How do I get rid of this dog of a program which I was instructed to download
to-day and has completely screwed up my use of my e-mail?

As far as I know, you can't. It's part of internet exporer. You can however
tell windows to use a different program as your default mail client.
Control Panel, internet options.
Exactly what is it doing to your email?

If you plan on using Outlook, you need to have Outlook Express on your
system, as they share some files.
