remove read-only designation from spreadsheet

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) I have a newly created spreadsheet in a shared folder. However, when opened by another person who has access to that folder, the document opens as read-only. I want to get rid of that setting. I can see where it is checked in preferences, but it is grayed out and I cannot change it.

As far as I know, Mac Excel 2008 does not allow opening files in "shared"
mode. You need to go kill the other user...

You can try sharing the workbook - Tools-Share Workbook, to allow multiple
users to work on the same workbook simultaneously.

Extending on Bob G's reply, read up on sharing workbooks in Excel Help ‹
there are a number of limitations when working with shared files as well as
routine Acceptance/Rejection of changes made by the various users.

When my husband and I got new MACs last summer, each of had Apple import our documents from our old PCs, including Excel spreadsheets. Once shared folders were set up between us, we could easily both work on existing spreadsheets. All spreadsheets are saved in the Excel 97-2004 spreadsheet, as is the newly created one. I will look at the shared workbook tips again, but I did not see anything to help me when I checked earlier. Why can both of us work on our older shared documents, but not on the new one?

A "shared folder" simply means that the files stored there are available to
more than one user account, but it doesn't mean that multiple users can open
the files in it for editing purposes at the same time. The first to open the
file has Read/Write privileges & any who open it while that user has it open
are designated as Read Only. But I think this last message may indicate that
your problem is a little different that how your first post was
interpreted... Do you mean that the other user can open that specific file
as Read Only even if no other user has the file open?

If so, that's more likely a permissions issue. Run Disk Utility - Repair
Disk Permissions on both Macs.

You may also have to check in Get Info for the shared folder as well as the
file itself to make sure that each user has Read/Write permissions. If the
permissions are dimmed click the Lock icon to make changes (Admin password
will be required).

If you still have the problem make sure to give complete details including
exact Office & OS X update levels, whether the shared folder is on one of
the Mac's HDs or whether it's on a separate shared volume, etc.
