Removing all traces of linked projects

Hi

I use Project 2002.

I have a number of individual MS Project files that represent different
projects we are working on. All of the current projects are linked to
another MS Project file to show a summary of current projects in one view.

The individual project files are linked to the Project Summary by clicking
on "Insert / Project" and then browsing to the file.

The Project Ssummary file has a master list of resources. To make use of
this list, in each of the individual project files I click on "Tools /
Resource Sharing / Share resources". I then click on "use resources / from:
and select the project summary file.

This all works fine so far. However, the project summary is designed to
show current projects only. Therefore, when a project is complete or
cancelled, the tasks for this project are removed via the Gantt chart view
by simply deleting the project heading. When I then look at the Resource
Usage view, the tasks from the deleted project can still be seen against the
appropriate resources. How do I get the task information to disappear from
the resources view as it does from the gantt view?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Alex

Hi,

Doing what you do will sooner or later corrupt either the project file or
the master or both. To remove a sub-project:
Open the sub-project
Open the master
Double-click the Project summary task of the sub-project
Delete the file path and this breaks the link
Save both files, but leave both open
Select the sub-project
Select Tools, Share Resources
Select Use own resources
Save BOTH files again.

This should work. It is vital to have both files open and save changes to
Both files. Failure to do this can cause DDE link corruption.

Hi Rod

Thanks for the info. Is there a better way to achieve what it is I am
trying to do? It sounds by your email as though this method could be at
risk of corruption, particularly as a number of people could be updating the
projects.

Thanks again
Alex
