renumbering endnotes

Beth

Hi. I completely reorganized a paper and now the endnotes are no longer in
numerical order within the text and they need to be. Is there any way to
change the order of the endnotes without having to start over? For example
in the second paragraph there is reference to endnotes 1,14. 14 is actually
the second endnote now noted so the number should be 2. Is there a way to
rearrange the order without having to manually change every 14 to a 2. Cut
and paste somehow?

Thanks

Well, if you had created the endnotes by using Insert | Endnote (Word's
endnote feature, however accessed), Word would have done this
automatically as you moved text around.

How did you create the endnotes?

If they are cross-references to a numbered list, then Select All and hit
F9 to update fields, including cross-references.

I did create the endnotes by using Insert then Endnotes. I have selected
Select All then F9 and nothing happens. It did not change anything when I
moved text around. Many are cross references to 17 original endnotes. If I
add another original then F9 it inserts it and renumbers the others. If I
delete an original and F9 it renumbers the others including cross references
but cut and pasting text does not change the order of the endnotes in the
text. I have 1 then 8 then 15, etc. Other thoughts?

I am not tracking changes -- should I be? I had thought of that as the
problem but when I checked it was not turned on. I turned it on and off a
couple of times and F9'd both ways just to be sure and it didn't work. It is
Word 2003. I appreciate all the help.

Is it possible to differentiate my original endnote from cross references? I
have done so much changing I have forgotten which are the originals. Perhaps
the original are in order and the cross references are not. Is there a way
to tell which is the original? Hopefully this question makes sense.

I think so. Try alt-F9, and the cross-references should show up as
fields, but the originals should not.

If the problem is with the cross-references, then they aren't updating
for some reason (possibly locked), but that would at least be logical.
Right-clicking on a problematic cross-reference should offer the Update
Field option--control-shift-F11 should unlock a locked field and do
nothing to an unlocked field.

If the original endnotes are really not renumbering themselves as you
move text, then the document may be corrupt, and you could try Save as
Web Page as described here:
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/corruptdoc.htm

Otherwise, I'm at a bit of a loss.
