repeating page numbers

I have been trying to insert page numbers in a 29 paged document, but the numbers are repeating and coming up to about 16. I am really stuck! How can I cancel the repeat?

You must have (a) inserted section breaks and (b) restarted numbering at
some point. The easiest solution is often to remove all the section breaks
temporarily, make sure numbering is set to "Continue from previous section,"
then reinsert the breaks.
