Is there a way to change the date on a task, then ask Project to resolve
conflicts throughout the project? Thanks!
There are a lot of different kinds of conflicts. If you're setting
dates on your tasks, you're probably creating quite a few. I'm
guessing you mean scheduling conflicts between tasks when you say
"conflicts throughout the project". Project has the capability to
reschedule other tasks based on your changing the date for a task, but
if you've entered dates on many tasks, Project no longer can
reschedule them because you told it not to! Seems a little strange at
first, but if you Google this NG for "constraints", you'll learn a lot
very quickly.
Project is designed to function best when you enter your list of tasks
and their estimated durations, then link them completely (you can
Google for "schedule continuity" for more on this). After you've done
this, and something changes and a task is rescheduled, Project will
reschedule the dependent tasks that don't have certain kinds of
constraints. But other kinds of contraints will inhibit Project's
ability to reschedule them.
There is a scheduling method around which Project, and other
scheduling software is built called Critical Path Method Scheduling. I
suggest that you'll struggle to get Project to work effectively for
you until you have at least a rudimentary understanding of this
concept. There are a number of good books on this (i.e., Lewis) or
better yet, there are a few Project instructors who can teach you both
CPM and Project. Watch out for the "pushbutton" instructors though.
Get an instructor who knows something about Project Management and
it'll pay huge dividends.
Hope this helps in your world.
