Could you be a little more specific?
Task Type: Fixed Units, Duration, Work?
Resouce Allocation Units? Is one guy set to 50% and then when you change,
the new guy is set to 100%?
There is a relationship between task duration, units, and work (each of
which may be set as fixed by Project). Changing one, causes the others to
change depending on the task type and the variable you changed.
If you make the task fixed work and then change resources, you should be OK.
Then just change it back to the task type it was before. Of course, fixed
Work will alter duration if you change the allocation units. If you fix the
duration, work will change if the allocation units change.

Easy way to see all this working together:
Window/Split....
click anywhere in the bottom pane.
View/More Views...
Task Details Form
Apply.
You now have control over more task information in the bottom pane and you
can adjust the task types to obtain the desired results.
