Hi Richard,
Glad to have helped thus far. I have set up the following: a Resource pool,
and two project files (Project A and Project B). In testing (using Project
2003 Professional with SP-1) I get the following results.
1) When I initially assign resources to Project A and save Project A, when
viewing the resource sheet in the pool file with the Work table applied, I
see [Work] equal to the [Work] in the project. In Project A if I then save
a baseline and then save the file and choose to update the pool, I see in
the pool file both Work and Baseline Work, and they are both equal.
2) When I close both Project A and the pool file and then re-open Project A
with the option of "Open resource pool to see all assignments across all
sharer files" the Resource Baseline Work in the pool file is zero. Baseline
Work seems to have mysteriously disappeared.
3) When I share resources between the pool file and Project B, assign and
save, the resource pool is updated with the [Work] for the new tasks. When
I save a baseline in Project B and then update the pool, the baseline work
for the resource re-appears and includes not only baseline work for Project
B but also Project A.
4) When I close all files and re-open, the baseline work for the resource in
the pool file disappears again.
5) If I open the resource pool file with option 2 the work for the resource
is there but no baseline work. If I then save the baseline, the baseline
work field for all resources is populated.
6) If I add a new task to Project A and save the baseline just for the
selected task, the baseline for the resource in the pool is not updated.
7) If a re-save the entire baseline for Project A and update the pool, the
baseline work for the resource is updated. However, when I close the files
and problem noted in #2 re-appears. The updated baseline for the resource
in the resource pool is lost again.
The issue that concerns me is the only way that appears to save a baseline
for the resource's work in the pool is to re-save the baseline after each
new file is attached to the pool. If actual work has been added, the
baseline then reflects the actual work and any variance is overwritten. You
can use the multiple baselines in the resource pool file to preserve old
baseline data but this seems a bit troublesome.
I don't know if this helps or not, but based upon your query and some
testing it appears as though there are some issues with baselines and pool
files.

JulieS,
Thank you. I believe we're getting close, but I still have a clarifying
question. I hope my question below is not overly confusing.
You wrote: " If you open the resource pool with the 3rd option (open pool
and all other files into a master file), select the resource in question
and
choose Tools > > Tracking > Save baseline, I believe you will see the
Baseline Work for the resource update properly."
You suggest to "select the resource in question". Should I do this by
highlighting the individual resource in the Resource Pool and then proceed
to
Tools>> Tracking>> Save baseline? By highlighting the individual resource
in
the Resource Pool, is the baseline affecting only that resource or all of
the
resources for all of the projects?
Or should I highlight the task where the resource is assigned and update
individual tasks? Should either method work?
Thank you again for assisting with your expertise on this problem.

Hi Richard,
Thanks very much for the kind words. I hope I can live up to your high
expectations ;-)
From your post below, I assume you are working in a resource pool
situation.
(A file with resources connected to at least 2 other project files - in
your
example, Project 1 and Project 2).
If you open the resource pool with the 3rd option (open pool and all
other
files into a master file), select the resource in question and choose
Tools
Tracking > Save baseline, I believe you will see the Baseline Work for
the
resource update properly. The Baseline Work for the resource should now
equal the Work field. (You can apply the work table to the resource
sheet
to double check.)
Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hello JulieS.
I've seen your replies to a number of different issues raised in the
discussion board, and I feel lucky to have your help with this
question.
Can you help me a little more in figuring out this issue. How do you
do
the
"total baseline for the resource", that you mention?
Here again is my example of the Resource Usage Summary:
Project 1:
Task 1 Baseline Hours: 6.77 h
Task 2 Baseline Hours: 0 h
Project 2:
Task 1 Baseline Hours: 84.78 H
Resource Summary Baseline Hours: 6.77
In addition to the baseline hours, the work is 6.77 for Project 1, but
there is zero work shown for Project 2 (no work has yet been done).
For
some
reason, the baseline is not reacting correctly.
Can you expand on your comments to help me out a little (maybe a lot).
Thank you again for your help.

Hi Traci & Richard,
My guess would be that new tasks were added to the project, the
resource
was
assigned and the individual task was baselined but the total baseline
for
the resource was not updated.
In Richard's example, the total baseline for the resource and the
addition
of the baseline work for individual tasks varies by 4.88 - the exact
number
of baseline work hours for a task.
Hope this helps.

Having the same exact problem... have spent 20+hours and have a
trainer
looking at the same thing. Still no solution, but if we figure it
out,
will
be sure to post.

I am reviewing information about baseline in the Resource Usage
View.
The
problem is that certain periods for individual resources do not sum
up
to
the
total for the specific period and specific resource, while other
periods
do
sum up to the total for that resource.
For example, one month includes two tasks for a resource that show
baseline
work of 30.5 hrs & 6.58 hrs which equal the resource sum of 37.1
hrs.
However, another month has the following hours for tasks: 28.42
hrs,
4.88
hrs, 6.58 hrs, 30.5 hrs, and 32.5 hrs, which total to 102.88 hrs,
but
the
resource total is 98 hrs. They do not match.
It is more pronounced with some of the other resources.
Can someone help me in figuring this out? Thanks in advance for
your
help.
