resource work hrs. total cost vs durations work hours total cost

How do I get the total cost of person's hrs for each task,subtaks, added to
total project instead of the cost of the durations/hrs based on the total
duration of all summary tasks together.
Ex:
Person work hrs (3hrtask +2hr task +3hr task) should not be equal to the
total work hrs of the summary task (inserted levelin delays,lag time and
other days in the middle). Cost should be $180.00 + $120.00+ $240.00
=$540.00 instead of $1,860.

Thanks to the forum I learned that " the duration of the summary task is
calculated based on the start of the earliest subtask to the latest subtask.
I understand that Project is also calculating the Work hours and cost columns
based on the same.
But what if I just want to identify the total cost of xperson hrs on all
tasks. How I do if as a consutant I want to charge hourly for the time spent
on all the tasks?
I checked in the resource sheet ,based on the standard rate, but it comes
with the same wrong total amount.

Duration hours in Project generates no cost, so the Cost field value you
see at any level (subtask or summary) is equal to the Work hours times
the resource rates plus any material cost plus any fixed cost.

The easiest way to see labor costs versus tasks is to use the Resource
Usage view. The assignment rows show that resource's work hours and cost
on each task, whereas the resource line shows that resource's total cost
- all spread over the selected timescale.

If the values don't seem to be updating, make sure you have calculation
(Tools/Options/Calculation tab) set for automatic.

Duration of subtasks are NOT additive into the duration of the summary task
(except under special circumstances) but work hours and costs are. Consider
a task that is an automated test that runs for 1 work week. It will take a
technician an hour to set it up Monday morning and an hour to collect the
data on Friday afternoon. Create a summary task with two 1-hour duration
subtasks "Setup" and "Collect Results." Link the subtasks FS with a 38 hour
lag time between them (so that Setup is Mon 8am to 9am and Collect is Fri
4pm to 5pm) and assign Susan Technican (who gets $25 per hour) to the two
subtasks. The summary will show a Duration of 40 hours, Work of 2 hours,
and a Total Cost of $50. The project budget is only for those man-hours of
work that the resources actually do speciofically on the project, not the
time over which that work is expended and this is one big reason that one
should never try to use Project as a payroll program - it calculates the
cost of doing the project's work, not the payroll costs of employing the
resources!

Are you sure you haven't assigned resources to the summary task as well as
the subtasks? Never do that.
