Resources, resource types, vendors

I am trying to figure out how to integrate Vendor information into a
Project plan, as well as resource groupings. Ideally I would like to be
able to have a hierchical view of resources (much like project tasks),
which can also be linked to vendors. As an example

Hardware
Computer Hardware
Desktop PC
Laptop
Monitor
Telecom Hardware
Telephone
Headset
Software
MS Project
MS Word
Custom Software
Personnel
Information Services
PMO
Joe Smith
Network Services
Patty Doe

I'd like to allocate resource types to project tasks, and also be able
to report on say, all task costs under "Hardware", or "Information
Services". In addition, it would be useful to be able to say I acquired
a bunch of Laptops from a certain vendor, and more Laptops from another
Vendor. Maybe I am asking Project to act more like a G/L system than it
was designed to be.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Matt

Try inserting a new custom outline code which allows you to build a
hierarchical table. Let me know if you need more info.

Hi MCraig,

It appears that you need a database rather than a timebased product as
Project is.

Would it not be better to set up an access database with all the data and
run relevant queries?

That looks like just what I am after, thank you Julian. FYI for
interested parties, go to Tools>Customize>Fields>Custom Outline Codes.
There is information in Help about this.
