Restarting numbering of numbered list isn't working and is grayed.

I have used MS Office for years as a professional desktop publisher. I am
now using Word from Office XP and can not get the numbering in my lists to
restart at 1 when I begin a new list. Has anyone else had this issue and, if
so, do you know a solution?
