Restoring Project databases and sites

Warren

We currently run MOSS 2007 and EPM on a standalone server environment. The
server hosting the these items needs to be formatted due to poor maintenance
by the System Administrator.

I am unsure as to the exact steps needed to take to properly backup and
restore the server to its previous state after the format. I managed to
obtain a test server to see if I can successfully restore the full Sharepoint
and EPM states before the format will be initiated.

Here is what I did so far:

1. Firstly I backed up the original databases and restored them on the new
server keeping their names the same.
2. I then installed MOSS and pointed all relevant content and site settings
to the databases. Sharepoint is now working and is a perfect duplicate of the
original one.
3. I then installed EPM.
4. When I set out to provision the Project Web Access Site to the SSP I get
several errors.
5. Here are a few combinations of settings I tried and their respective
errors. Needless to say, I am unable to successfully restore the Project
server
6. Combination 1
a. The Web application to host the PWA site is our Sharepoint site.
b. The PWA path is PWA
c. The databases point to the restored databases from the original server
with all the original settings, project data etc.
i. ERROR: The project Web Access Site Specified cannot be created because a
site by that name already exists. Enter another Project Web Access Path and
try again. (Our original Project web access site used the path PWA. I suspect
that this is still in the config database as a remnant from the previous
configuration.)
7. Combination 2
a. I changed the PWA path to Project
b. The databases point to the restored databases from the original server
with all the original settings, project data etc.
c. After a short while the provisioning fails and I am referred to the event
log.
i. EventLog ERROR: Provisioning ‘Project’: One or more of the databases
already contains schema. When editing or creating a Project Server Instance,
you may Specify:
-Four Databases that do not exist
-Four existing Blank Databases
-Four Existing Project Server databases of the same version of the same
installation.
Combinations of blank, new and existing databases are not allowed.

I do not understand why it does not succeed because the databases are all
existing Project Server databases of the same version of the same
installation.
8. Combination 3
a. I changed the PWA path to Project
b. The databases point to new clean databases.
c. Provisioning succeeds but this is a brand new, clean Project Wab Access
site, which is not the desired result.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Hello Warren,

I would advise against trying to restore a project server site using
standard SQL backups, PS 2007 seems to be very fussy when it comes to
restoring from SQL backups. I hope you have not formatted your existing
server. If you have not then I would advise you to go have a look at the
technet article on backing up and restoring PS 2007. It can be found here.
http://technet2.microsoft.com/Offic...2dc7-4653-8079-fb32880324451033.mspx?mfr=true

Let us know how it goes.

Hope that helps.

Regards,
Dave
