I have OL 2002 from Office XP Pro, with SP-2. I am
running on Win 2000, with SP-4. I have a box running
sendmail 8.12.10, the latest version, and the Univ. of WA
IMAP server, the reference implementation of an IMAP
server, in a very recent version (2002 release date),
where my email is stored. I can access this IMAP server
from many different IMAP clients (NetScape, Eudora, etc.,
etc.) without problems, and without the symptom I describe
below.
I have configured an account for this IMAP server, and a
local account (.pst file) in Outlook with folders for
specific newsgroups I subscribe to, so that I can use
rules in Outlook to automatically move mail from each
newsgroup from the inbox for the IMAP account to the
correct folder in the .pst folder. The rules work fine
most of the time, when I keep Outlook up and do not
disconnect from the IMAP server.
However, when I start Outlook, or when I disconnect from
the IMAP server and then reconnect, for instance if I
spend an extended period using another account, the rule
is partially applied and partially not applied; in
addition, the email messages it is not applied to are
apparently downloaded, that is, the title headers become
bold and the first few lines of the messages become
visible (and this does not happen to any other messages in
the inbox for that account at any other time). If I open
the rules wizard and apply the rules, the messages are all
moved to the proper folders; however, I wind up with
duplicates, sometimes with the contents intact and
sometime with blank contents, but the same time and date,
title, and sender.
This is not the first version of Outlook that has
displayed this problem, nor is it the first version of
either the IMAP server or sendmail. I have been using
sendmail since version 7, and IMAP since 1998, and Outlook
since Office 97. This problem has persisted since I
started using Outlook. I have searched many, many
different newsgroups, FAQs, sets of instructions, and
inspected the IMAP server source code, and cannot find any
information on this problem, nor any reason why it might
happen. I have used network tracing tools and examined
the IMAP communication between Outlook and the IMAP
server, and there is no difference whatsoever between
queries and responses that show this symptom, and those
that do not.
Can anyone suggest the cause of this problem and how it
might be avoided?
