Safari cannot find 11.3 update server...already read previous posts

After reading the previous posts regarding 11.3 update for M.O. im
still having trouble. I have a powerbook g4 running on 10.3.9/power pc.
Niether the auto updater or mactopia download page will allow me to
download this upgrade. I have never had any issues with previous
updates for office. My version of OFFICE 2004 is a "student teacher
edition". I tried the link left in other posts to download as well but
no success. The exact mess. says " Safari cant open the page
"http://download.microsoft.com/downl...955e-af8525575c27/office2004-1130updateen.dmg"
because it cant find the server "download.microsoft.com".

because it cant find the server "download.microsoft.com".

What happens if you try to download from the link on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/do
wnload/Office2004/Office2004_1130.xml&secid=4&ssid=31&flgnosysreq=True

(or using tinyurl:

http://tinyurl.com/mykum

)?

Not finding download.microsoft.com sounds like your DNS server was
having problems, or perhaps that MS's server was down temporarily. It
was responding two minutes ago.

Then you have a problem with your network, ISP, or DNS servers, because
I successfully used them today to download the files.

Do you have any firewalls enabled?

No, I contacted my ISP which is comcast and they said it was either a
mac or ms problem. They checked my router and modem and could not find
any issues because I can gain access to the internet. I have not
installed any 3rd party security software to my mac. I was told I dont
have too much to worry about since its not a windows pc. I called mac
and one person said she had a cust. who got a new router from comcast
and when i talked to comcast they had no clue what i was talking about.
Called Mac back and they reconfigured my internt connections, I got a
new wep pass key from comcast. Tried to connect the ethernet directly
to laptop and still NO DOWNLOAD. Would you suggest I go to a local hot
spot and download using there wireless network? This is truly the
oddest thing!

Install tcpflow and watch the traffic to see what if failing.

Download the Mac OS X 10.3.x / Panther version here:

<http://www2.entropy.ch/download/tcpflow-0.21.pkg.tar.gz>

If you are running older software see
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html> for links.

When you install tcpflow, you do not see it.

To run the test, quit all other apps that might be connecting to the
internet like your emai, ftp client.

Copy/paste in this command in the Terminal:

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

Now try clicking on the link for download and watch the traffic in the
window of the Terminal. You should see what is failing.

I suspect this problem really is with Comcast. A few Comcast users are
reporting the same problem.

Can you do a little testing for me? I'd like you to attempt a traceroute
from your computer to download.microsoft.com. A traceroute will show the
addresses of every device you must pass through to get from one place to
the next.

Open the Network Utility found in /Applications/Utilities and select the
Traceroute tab. Enter "download.microsoft.com" into the field and click
the Trace button.

If everything works as it should, you will see about 20-30 hops. All of
them should include IP addresses and times in milliseconds (ms). If you
see any asterisks ( * ) then something is wrong. Can you post back your
results? DO NOT INCLUDE THE FIRST TWO OR THREE HOPS. This information
can possibly be used to identify you and we don't need to do that here.

If we identify a problem then someone from Microsoft may be able to take
this information and help resolve these issues.

If you have any questions or problems, please let me know.

Thanx! bill

Thanks Bill for the suggestion!!! I ran a trace for MS download and I
got this message "traceroute: unknown host www.download.microsoft.com"

I then just ran a trace for microsoft.com and got 30 hop but only the
22nd hop had a message. See below

I just need to be sure about something. Can you please verify the server
addresses you entered?

When you entered the server names you should have entered:
download.microsoft.com and
www.microsoft.com

but not

www.download.microsoft.com and
microsoft.com.

If you entered the first set of addresses then something is definitely
wonky somewhere.

If you have a home router then the first hop should be your home
router's address. If that's failing (you're receiving * * *) then it may
be misconfigured. As a simple test can you plug your computer directly
into your cable or DSL modem and see what happens?

Curious to know your results.

Bill-
I typed the 1st set of addresses correctly and that was the response I
received.
I also connected my ethernet cable directly to my laptop without any
success. The identical messages came back regarding server access.

Bill-
I was able to get this issue resolved. If comcast is the ISP provider
they are having a problem with the DNS servers. The fix is to go to the
TCP/IP and enter 68.87.64.196 then on the next line type 68.87.66.196.
Click apply and go back to the ms.mac download page and get the update.
I did this and in no time everything was taken care of. Thanx for your
help and let anyone else know it can be done.

I've heard that Comcast has been a huge problem to the many Adelphia
subscribers who got sold to Comcast. They've had major problems from
anything like the kind of problem you've had, to email. Terrible
customer support, too.
The only way companies like this learn is when their customers drop them.
