Safe Location for Shared Notebook/Backups

Hello All,
I'm trying to set up a network shared folder that can hold shared OneNote
2007 notebooks. I've gathered that there may be issues with some share
locations (NAS, etc.) and want to ask a couple questions before I try this.

1)Are there any known issues with putting a OneNote 2007 Shared Notebook on
a shared folder from a Windows 98 machine?

2)I understand the backup scheme that OneNote 2007 uses on a local machine.
But I don't get the impression that shared notebooks are covered by that (I
don't think they're backed up on the client machine). Is there a recommended
strategy for backup of Onenote notebooks on a shared drive? I've thought of
just scheduling an overnight backup of the directory containing the notebook
on the "server", but I don't know if it could cause problems if one or more
clients may have the shared notebook open at the time the backup was done.

That should work, although Windows 98 is quite old now, so I don't know
if there'd be any problems.

The OneNote builtin backup works for all notebooks open in OneNote,
including shared notebooks.

Assuming your backup software does not require exclusive access to the
files for the duration of the backup, there should be no problems if
OneNote keeps the notebooks open.

Hi Ilya,

Thanks for the info. As always, your replies are most helpful!

As another note to the paranoid (i.e. anyone using computers to handel a lot
of data...), each participant of a shared notebook can set up their own
backup schedule and location(under options) to their own choice, allowing
the cleint to write its own backup files. From there it can get creative,
but you can easily get several backups in common use without a lot of
effort.

I am not suggesting that a working server is not backed up, but unless the
admin of the box (or someone) has actually restored it at some point don't
assume that a server backup process is valid... Back in the backup tape
days it was especially tragic to learn that they had been doing it
consistently wrong...

Besides, it is so easy to have both...
