Saving a list in XML (data only) how do you retain line feeds?

I have been trying to save a list of items separated by line feeds but Word
2003 strips the character and doesn't even replace it with a space.

A linefeed is spurious to xml. Use a pipe instead.

I've been using a substitute charachter but my point is that word should
retain the linefeed, or there should be a way to retain it.

As line feeds are spurious to XML it shouldnt and doesnt LFs are
for .txt or .rtf output
