saving a word doc to unicode text - characters are dropped

I am saving word docs as Unicode Text and characters are randomly being dropped. In some cases it is the space between two words that is dropped. I tried saving first as Rich Text and then saving as Unicode Text and was delivered the same errors. Any suggestions as to how to save to Unicode Text to eliminate the problem?
