saving out messages

Hi folks
Just a small query, is it possible to save out messages in
outlook express to say another hard drive (or even a
floppy), you can "export" the contact list as a WAB file
and reimport it, but is it possible to somehow do the same
with those important messages, and then to be able to
reimport them back into OE after a master HD failure, so
they are not lost..

The easiest way I have found to do this is to open Outlook
Express then click.
File-->Export-->Messages
Click OK
Select All Folders or Selected folders

After it has completed exporting the files they are saved
as .dbx files. You should have a dbx file for every
folder and subfolder.

The dbx files can be imported to other programs or just
saved to another hard drive for back up.

Backup and Restore OE
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/index.htm

This newsgroup is for support of Outlook
97/98/2000/2002/2003 from the Office suite of products. Outlook
Express is actually a separate program despite the similar name.

For help with your OE questions, try an OE newsgroup such as
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress (for OE 6), or
an OE help website such as http://insideOE.tomsterdam.com. If you're
accessing the Microsoft newsgroups through the MS Product Support
Services "Community Newsgroups" web interface, click
http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp?icp=InternetExplorer
to get to the Internet Explorer groups, then click the plus sign next to
your version of IE to see the link to the Outlook Express group for that
version number. Good luck!

Absolute CRAP! the OE export function exports to Outlook (pst file) or
Exchange server ONLY. It does NOT export to dbx files.

With my version of OE it works, and exports to dbx files.
I just did it.

I don't think so, I'm using OE 6. I just did it again,
and it worked fine.

Are you actually clicking on File- Export-Messages? because if you are, then
I repeat - you have the ONLY version of OE in the WORLD that exports to dbx
files!

I can send you screen shots if you would like, but yes.

File-->Export-->Messages-->All Folders

Wait for it to finish.

Do a search for *.dbx on the C: drive. I'm able to find
every folder I have in OE 6 with a .dbx extension. I have
done this numerous times, on multiple computers.

that does that then.

I've got OE 6, too. I've just tried Files-Export-Messages and it warned
me that it would export them to Outlook or Exchange. I clicked OK, it
asked me which folders I wanted to export, and promptly started
exporting them to Outlook 2000 for me. I can, of course, export them
from Outlook 2000 in a variety of formats.

Well, I repeat. You are the ONLY person in the WORLD to be able to use the
Export function in OE to export OE messages to dbx files! EVERYONE else
gets a message saying "this will export messages to Microsoft Outlook or
Microsoft Exchange" as soon as they click on File-Export-messages. Perhaps
you have an add-in that someone installed?

It says it is exporting to Outlook or Exchange, but after
it is done there are .dbx files that have all the email in
them.

Ahhhh. Those are the original files, NOT exported files!

Ask in an Outlook Express newsgroup and read

As far as I can tell, it doesn't export to PSTs directly, only to Outlook,
and then to whatever the default delivery location is for Outlook (Exchange
or a PST).

Well, of course you have DBX files. Where do you think Outlook Express
stores its messages? You had those DBX files _before_ you did the export.
Export has NOTHING whatsoever to do with DBX files.
