saving to a Cd

I have been saving fiels to a CD. When I want to make changes in these files
it will not let me beacuse it ahs saved in a read-only mode. I don't know
how to get it out of the read only mode, so that it won't do that in the
future. I have tried clicking PROPERTIES and unclicking Read only, and then
apply, but it doesn't save those changes. any ideas?

CD-R is an inherently read-only medium. The operating system won't
allow you to make files on a CD not read-only. You must copy the files
to the hard drive, work on them there, and copy the changed documents
back to the CD (assuming you haven't finalized the disk).

If you use CD-RW disks or software such as InCD or DirectCD to make
the CD look like a giant floppy disk, you run a very high risk of
corrupting documents so they can't be used any more (see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm). I'd strongly
advise you not to do that.
