Schedule Variances showing up before Start Date

I have a project in which there are schedule variances for tasks that have
yet to start. Why is this happening and how can I resolve it?

By "schedule variances" I assume you mean the SV field. Normally a
variance will occur when the Baseline Start date is different from the
Schedule Start date. I would check you baseline. If it was set when the
plan was first developed and tasks have slipped, then you should have a
variance.
