Secret to constructing polygons

I need to construct a few irregular polygons. I'm positive I've done
this in the past using the line tool. I am able to get 2 segments
without any problems, but the next segment is not connected.

What's the secret procedure?

While fiddling with the line tool, I accidentally discovered an easier
way to get an irregular polygon. Regular polygons can be converted to
irregular polygons using the line tool. Place a rectangle, then select
the line tool. Now each corner can be dragged independently leaving
the other three in place.
