secure web page

This seems to be a topic that cannot be answered but I am going to try
anyway. I too would like to secure a webpage for "members only." I have
looked at (am playing with) "How to create a password-protected Web page by
using FrontPage 2003, Active Server Pages, and an Access database."
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825498) I have run
through the example in this tutorial but to no success. I am thinking that
it is because I already have a website published and there was a conflict
with the "default" and "index" pages. My next attempt is to modify my
existing pages with the appropriate code required. If I knew what that was.
I am not a probrammer but I love to dabble. I am trying to determin the
difference between .htm and .asp pages. I am guessing ht. is a static page
that cannot interact with databases. Would I need to go back and save all my
pages under the .asp extension? Will this allow me to try to modify my pages
to be able to secure the area I want to secure? My server (host provider)
does offer an option to password protect folders. I tried to create a folder
and place that one page in that folder but the page would not display any of
my navigational buttons, but I think the links were still there. It just
seems like the wrong way to achieve what I want to achieve. I am looking for
a knowledable person to work with on this issue. My email address is:
(e-mail address removed) I would really appreciate any and all possitive
advise. Thanks

A couple of questions:

1. Do you want each user to have their own user name and password, or will one set work
for everyone.
2. What kind of server is the site hosted on?? If you're not sure, post a link and
someone will tell you, because if it's Apache/Unix, password protecting a directory is
"usually" extremely simple.

Steve - I am trying to create an area that members can log onto. These
members will be from all over the world. Free membership, but need to secure
it anyway, reducing riff-raff. So I will be using MS Access as my database.
My provider offers a PHP database but very confusing to me. I am on a
WinServer and it supposrts .asp I used to be on a Unix server and yes, it
was very easy, but had to switch (upgrade?) to a winserver to do what I want
(or what I think I want) with databases. So to answer your first question,
yes, each member will require their own password.
