Send/Receive Endless Loop in Outlook 2007

Hi there,

I'm using Outlook 2007 on a laptop with Vista. My Send/Receive setting is
set on "Send immediately when connected." I have two email accounts - one
business, one personal - routed through Outlook.

Every now and again, usually on a message with a distribution list or an
attachment, Outlook gets into a continuous, non-stopping loop of sending and
receiving messages. In the most recent instance of this, I checked the
Send/Receive details to find that Outlook had completed 108/108 tasks before
I shut it down.

This is a chronic issue. While it is not an every day event, it is often
enough tobe problematic. This is particularly so because the message stays
in the Outbox and so I don't know if the person has received my message or
not - particularly when I use a distribution list.

The only work around I have discovered so far is unchecking the "Send
immediately when connected" box, exiting from Outlook, restarting Outlook,
deleting the offending email(s), and starting again.

Any assistance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kathleen,

Thanks for your prompt response.

Yes. I have the AVG Free edition which I loaded when my cable service
provider suggested I move away from their version of F-Secure (i.e. F-Secure
allows the service provider to call the anti-virus s/w "Shaw Secure").
Apparently Shaw Secure was causing some other probglems for me.

Bill

Go into services and stop the AVG email scanning service to see if that
improves things. If you simply stop the service, it will restart the next
time you restart the PC/laptop.

If you wish to test for a longer period of time, stop the service and
disable it. You'll get an AVG error but your AV security won't be
compromised. Your real time scanner will catch whatever it's been updated
for. You actually don't need AV to scan incoming/outgoing email and it often
causes this type of problem.

Post back and let me know.

"Emaailk Scanner"Hi Kathleen,

Again, thanks for yur prompt response.

I've done as you suggested and now we'll wait and see!

Just to be clear, if I understand you correctly, I do not need to have
"Email Scanner" in the "AVG Control Center" turned on in order to be
protected?

Also, do you know whether the emails I tried to send out (through the
distribution list) actually got out to everyone? I know at least one person
on the list got the message because I got an automated response from her.

Again, thanks for all of your asssitance, Kathleen. It is appreciated.

Regards,
Bill

Hello

Yes, it's correct. You don't need to scan incoming and outgoing email. It's
not even recomended and your security won't be compromised.

As for what's in your Outbox, I really couldn't hazard a guess. It's
possible they all went out, it's even possible they went out multiple times.
Or maybe not at all.

The reason that we don't recommend that you configure antivirus to actively
scan your incoming and outgoing email is that it forces your antivirus to act
as a proxy server so to speak. It steps up and becomes a link between Outlook
and your email server. It downloads and scans the email as it's coming in and
going out. If you poll frequently, it may not have enough time to complete
the tasks before it has to start them again. This may be true if you have
large attachments as well, incoming or outgoing. You can see the endless
round of problems you can get caught up in.

Give this a try and get back to me.

Are you using a POP account? What do you have set for your send/receive
interval?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your interest.

I am using a POP/SMTP server and the intervals are set at every 10 minutes.
I hope that information is helpful.

Hi Kathleen,

I have an update.

I tried sending an email message and a pdf attachment (< 200 kb) to a
distribution list I have. I reduced the amount of time for the Send/Receive
interval to 30 minutes from 10. I addressed it to myself and bcc'ed it to my
distribution list. I then had to leave the office for two hours.

I just got back and looked at my emailonly to find that the message is stil
in my Outbox though my own mailbox has received the message (i.e. I received
the announcement I sent in my Inbox).

Any more thoughts? Thanks.

Regards,
Bill

Sorry. Here's a P.S. Where the icons are in the bottom right of my screen, it
says the MS Outlook is "synchronizing my folders." That is ongoing? Also, it
appears I can receiv e new messages whil all of this is going on.

REgards,
Bill
