send/receive not working correctly. can't cancel either

I use googlemail.com and Outlook. Some of my e.mails don't get sent even
though the address is valid. send/receive very slow and sticks - I try and
cancel the e.mails but tools>settings>cancel all etc. doesn't work. What's
happening please?
