For some reason, my inbox does not show new messages
unless I click on an existing message in my inbox, then
new messages appear.

Are you using Exchange as the mail server? Or POP3/SMTP mail servers?

I assume that you have an Exchange account. The problem is that the
information that Exchange is sending to Outlook to let it know that a change
has occurred in your mailbox is being blocked by something. Have your
network administrator look at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815052, which could
be the problem. If nobody can figure it out, try applying the registry
changes in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q305572
(Outlook 2002) or
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q304849 (Outlook
2000) to make Outlook start asking Exchange for change information rather
than waiting for Exchange to tell it.

Your problem is occuring because the UDP packets that Exchange uses to
notify Outlook of changes are not getting to Outlook. It may be an ISA
server issue (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815052), or it could
be a router, firewall, etc. If you can't solve the problem at the network
level, you can apply the registry settings in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q305572 (Outlook
2002) or http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q304849
(Outlook 2000) to cause Outlook to poll the Exchange server.
