send/recieve progress box appears when shouldn't

My Outlook Send/Receive Progress box pops up every time the program sends and receives mail, even though the box in the pop-up that says "Don't show this dialog box during send and receive" is checked. I have tried unchecking it just to be sure that it isn't just a mistake in the wording - but no matter what - the damn box keeps coming up. If anyone knows the trick to this, I'd appreciate some help.

Sorry - the version is whatever was installed with Office XP.
