Sending e-mail

When I compose a message and am finished and ready to send it I click on the file menu and there is no "Send" option. So I tried moving the message to my outbox. That worked. But when I then click "Send/Receive" my dialog box comes up and goes through all the motions, but the message remains in my outbox. What is wrong?

What version of Outlook are we talking about? If Outlook 2000 or previous;
make sure you've got it installed in Internet Mail Only or
Corporate/Workgroup mode.
