sending email with form input...

M

Mr. Know Nothing

I'm trying to set up a form so that it send me an email with the input from
the form. I have read the book " Front page inside out " and also look at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;196461

but when i'm at the last step i get what is describled in the 'note' from
the link above. How do i set up my FP server extensions to get this to work?
I'm using server 2003 enterprise edition.

I have followed the link in the IIS manager under my website and have looked
at the page it brings me to in explorer but i can't seem to find what is
wrong. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly
appreciated.

This is not something you can do, unless you are the System Administrator
for the web server hosting your web site. It is something the System
Administrator at your ISP will have to do. Note the following from the error
message:

"Please direct your system administrator or Internet Service Provider to the
instructions in 'Setting Up Your E-mail Options on Windows' or 'Setting up
Email options on UNIX' in the Server Extensions Resource Kit."

I am the system administrator for the server. I have full control of the
machine as it is my server. Can you help me???

Do you have the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions Resource Kit? The article
you mentioned directs you to a link (duplicated here for your convenience)
to an article that tells you how to get it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310931/

Once you have the FP 2000 SERK, you just follow the instructions for
"Setting up Your Email Options on Windows."

The link he supplied to the FP 2000 server extensions and the FP 2000 SERK
are not applicable, since he is using a Windows 2003 server, which uses the
FP 2002 server extensions.

He should start here:

Mr. Know Nothing

I have already gone through those setting. Note i have gone through them
again to make sure they are correct. I still get the same error message. When
i try to set my form to send to email i get the error message that you can
view here:

http://ujr.ca/FP Email Error.jpg

NOTE: I am editing my site on the server in one folder and then publishing
the full folder to another folder that i have the web address pointing to.

Any suggestions on how to make the email work?

Kev: I personally don't understand what he's doing with his web on the
server.
He also hasn't given us any details on setup of the email transport in the
extensions, or whether he is using an email address within the domain of the
mail server.

since you're having trouble with the FrontPage form handler's email
transport, why not look at something like www.cluxa.com
also there are plenty of examples of "email form handlers" for all server
side scripting languages.

Yes the email address that i'm using

Well, for one thing, there are TWO email addresses to every email message
(at least). One is the FROM address, and this must be on the domain of the
mail server. The other(s) would be TO, and can be any domain. Which one are
you referring to?

Re "Yes the email address that i'm using is within the domain of the mail server."
I don't think so
- Your sample screen shot shows it going to a gmail account

Did you set up a SMTP mail server (that you are running) under the FP SE?
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=196489

Both. The "From:" email address is from the domain and the "To:" is my
personal email address. For now it isn't in the same domain but that could
change.

M

Mr. Know Nothing

I was told that the "from" address had to be in the same domain but the "to"
address could be anything. Was that bad info??

M

Mr. Know Nothing

yes i ahve considered that option but i seem to only get replies in this
forum therefore i thought i would start here since people actualy write back
here...

Okay, well, your error message shot shows FrontPage in the background, so
I'm getting back to an earlier question: Are you testing this on a

I'm editing the file vis remote desktop in one folder and then i have to
publish it to the folder that houses the website. I have also tried to edit
the site directly in the website folder but that doesn't work. I was told
thta i had to always publish my files for them to work on the web. Is this
true?

K

Yes, well, at least you have to test them using HTTP, which means running a
request to a web server.
