Sending Error 0x800CCC0F with Vista and McAffey

Peter McNamara

I have read each of the posts on this forum and tried each of the suggested
remedies regarding sending E-mail messages resulting in a persistent error
"The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues
contact server administrator or ISP".

My setup is Vista Home edition SP1 running on an ACER Aspire Notebook. The
problem is demonstrated from either Outlook 2007 (installed with Office 2007
Enterprise SP2) or Windows Mail and persists if I disable the Firewall and
Virus scanning in McAffey Security Center, or even if I completely uninstall
it. I have contacted McAffey support, my ISP and ACER without success.

Test messages sent from the Mail profile creation tool always work
demonstrating I have the correct SMTP/POP3 parameters. Creating a new profile
or extending the server timeout period has no effect either.

This problem was not evident until a batch of upgrades were recently
installed by McAffey and Windows including Office 2007 SP2.

I will be very grateful for any assistance please. I am an IT professional
with 20 years experience and cannot fathom how such a critical function can
become a bug in standard installations of the Operating System for a
relatively simple PC.

Diane thanks for your response.

Please note that I have tried completely uninstalling McAffey and the
problem continues. How will your suggestion work if totally removing McAffey
doesn't do the trick?
I am starting to get a picture that Vista is an unstable operating system
for this and other bugs I am experiencing such a black screen on resuming
from 'sleep' or 'hybernation' necessitating a cold boot.

These are all 'out of the box' problems since I went to the effort this week
of reinstalling the OS and applications completely from scratch in an
attempty to get a reliable PC.

SUCCESS.

As I suspeced this error was not caused by virus detection software or
firewalls.

The solution came from my ADSL modem manufacturer in Australia, Netcomm:

This behaviour is caused by a feature in Windows Vista networking.

You can try the following to resolve this issue:

- Open Start Menu, click in the white search box. Type in cmd and then
Right-Click the Command Prompt result at the top, and then select "Run as
Administrator".
- Type the following: netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
and then press Enter.
- In a few seconds, a message should appear under what you have typed saying
"Ok." Close the window.

Your email should then work correctly.

Unfortunately this change is not saved by Windows Vista and you will need to
re-enter it after every reboot or startup.
