Severely Corrupted Passworded Files

Hi

I have about 20 Word 2003 files which are all password protected. My hard drive developed an unexplained, unrepairable physical problem last month and my most recent backup (from last month also) seems to be corrupted too.

The computer technician was able to recover the word files but now when I open them I am not prompted for the password and see only a character that looks like "y" with dots on it for the number of pages the original document had (up to several hundred).

I had done a lot of work between backups (STUPID STUPID STUPID! I KNOW!!!!) I am an author and am desperate to recover the work I did before the crash. I have tried several utilities from the net all of which recover nothing at all.

Any ideas??? Thanks in advance for any help.

G'day "Kelly" <[email protected]>,

Did you try

File > Open

and change type of document to Recover Text from any file?

Hi

Thanks for your help - I tried all of the files this way. One recoverd some gibberish but nothing like what was in the file, and most of the rest only came up blank. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

G'day "Kelly" <[email protected]>,

Restore from backup from before problem were detected. This is a key
reason to use VSS or similar on EVERY word doc you produce.
