shading specific cells

I have 2003 XP. How can I shade specific cells in a table without doing
each one individually. I would like to select and shade cells in different
areas of a table all at once but I can't seem to do that without adjacent
ones shading too. I thought this could be done in word 2003. Thanks

Hold down the CTRL key while selecting the separate cells

Greg: I tried that many times and it still does not work. Any other
suggestions?

Greg: sorry - I figured it out. I was holding the control key down while
clicking on each cell but was not select the cell first. Thanks for your
help in any event.
