OS 10.5.5; Mac-Word 2008.

Occasionally my Mac-Word 08 goes into what I call "Pacman" word-eating mode.
A series of ..... begin to quickly consume words in my document.

I have learned to press Command-period to stop the word consumption but I
then have to restore the words manually by edit>undo typing.

Is there something I can do to get rid of "Pacman"?

Hi Herbert;

There really isn't much Word can do to initiate that type of behavior -
especially 2008 which doesn't even support VBA (macros). Nor have I seen any
reports of anything similar since the software was released. My first
inclination is to suspect that your spacebar is sticking. If you have access
to another keyboard see if the same thing continues to happen with it.

You might also try holding down the Shift key while launching Word to see if
that stops the behavior. Also try logging in while holding Shift to avoid
loading any utilities that launch automatically. If either cures the problem
it suggests you have some other software in use which is causing the
characters to be replaced. Are the replacements actually dots/periods or are
they non-printing characters (spaces)?

If none of the above helps we'll need to know your exact update levels of
OSX & Office. Also, is it one specific document or *all* documents? Have you
tried any other programs (such as Text Edit) to see if the same thing
happens? Any additional details such as the document origin would help.

You need to re-apply the latest Combo Update for Mac OS, and then apply the
latest updates from the Microsoft website.

Download the full update packages and run them from your downloads folder --
don't rely on the automatic update mechanism, because it may mistakenly
assume you already have the update you need (and we can't tell which one
that is...)

Somewhere along the line, one of the files on your computer has not been
updated and it now does not match the rest of them.

Hope this helps
