top menu shows two 'file' headers and dropdowns

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Power PC when I open Word, the top menu bar shows
apple word file file view insert etc
in other words, two file headers and the dropdowns beneath them.
the dropdowns differ slightly from one another
otherwise, Word seems to be working fine,
I don't like the look of it, though.
Any solutions gratefully received. Am happy to send a screen shot to illustrate the point, if that would help.
thank you

First, try a "Power-off restart" and let us know how that goes.

That causes the operating system to fully initialise, and should solve the
problem.

If the problem is still there on a restart after turning the power off,
we'll have to do some more digging to find out what the issue is.

Cheers

thanks for replying, John McGhie
I tried the power off restart (I turned the imac off using the power button on the back, without choosing shut down and without quitting word) but sadly, nothing's changed.
If you have any further ideas, I'd be really pleased to hear them.
thanks

Try the basics: Go to View> Customize Toolbars & Menus, Toolbars & Menus
page. Click the Name of the Menu Bar then click the Reset button. See if
things improve once you OK out of the dialog.

Ouch! That's not quite what I meant :)

I will have to be more careful in my descriptions in future.

What I mean was "Choose Shutdown, and wait until the power goes off".

That does a clean exit of everything and sets the operating system to run
its housekeeping tasks when it next starts up.

You then wait a minute for the power-supply to reset and the hard disk to
spin down. Then start her up again. The startup will take a while, because
the OS will then clean out all its temporary storage places (which you can't
ordinarily see...)

However: What you have done is enough to tell me that my suggestion was not
going to work, so next you use Bob's suggestion, and report back on your
results.

Cheers
